The Lodge at Sea Island

The Lodge at Sea Island

Regarded as the top-rated resort and boutique hotel in Sea Island, The Lodge is equal parts intimate hideaway and Forbes Five-Star hotel. Situated on the site of an antebellum plantation whose ruins are still visible, it is enchanting and welcoming. The resort amenities include rich wood, exposed beams, marble baths with deep soaking tub and heavenly rainhead showers.

The resort features 43 rooms, six new cottages, new oceanfront pool and pool house, and new 18-hole putting course. At The Lodge you’re surrounded—by stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and spectacular championship golf courses. Away from it all. Yet right where you want to be.

The Lodge has been recognized as a Forbes Five-Star resort in 2002-2018 and ranked the #1 Hotel in the U.S.A. by U.S. News & World Report two times. Travel + Leisure also named The Lodge as one of the Top Ten Resorts in the Continental U.S. as part of its World’s Best Awards in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Seaside & Plantation

“At Sea Island, Davis Love III learned how to play golf from his father, practiced with his brother, and introduced the game to his son. His story could easily be the story of any Sea Island guest. Because where else can you get championship golf courses, top instructors, new teeing areas and practice greens and a brand new, 17,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Golf Performance Center?”

Unquestionably one of the most sought after golf destinations in the United States, Sea Island has drawn players of all skill and ages because there is simply no better place for a golfer to learn and grow. The diversity of golf courses on site exquisitely intertwine the traditions of the past with the technologies and facilities of the future.

Our members will have the opportunity to compete on the two magnificent and marquee layouts – Seaside and Plantation – during our stay. Pending Board approval, we will cap off our golf experience by playing Rees Jones’ Ocean Forest, an exclusive private seaside club of international renown.

Sea Island Golf Club (Seaside)

The Seaside design has been credited in the past to famed British golf architect H.S. Colt, but the present Seaside Course is purely Tom Fazio, who incorporated a nine originally designed by Colt (previously called the Seaside Nine) along with a nine (the Marshland Nine) designed in 1974 by Joe Lee, to create a totally new 18- hole course. But in keeping with the resort’s heritage, Fazio styled his new course in the design fashion of Colt, with big clamshell bunkers, smallish putting surfaces and exposed sand dunes off most of the windswept fairways. The Seaside Course has been a mainstay of the PGA Tour’s early season roster for many years.

Sea Island’s Seaside course is a Tom Fazio re-design of the 1929 classic by famous golf course architects Harry S. Colt and Charles Alison. Golf great Bobby Jones described it as among the best nine holes he ever played. By tying the original Seaside with the old Marshside course, Fazio, according to Davis Love III, transformed two nines from “18 holes that didn’t match into 18 matchless holes.”

Seaside is an ocean-side links course that combines its beautiful natural setting with a golf course that is both challenging and fun. The beautifully manicured fairways and greens are bordered by sweeping dunes mixed with native grasses, wildflowers, and bunkers. And the wind creates a different golf experience daily. Sea Island’s most dramatic layout, Seaside is routinely ranked among the top 100 courses in the United States. Along with the Plantation Course, it is the home of the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic, a FedEx cup event hosted by Sea Island touring professional Davis Love III.

Sea Island Golf Club (Plantation)

Created by the great British designer Walter Travis in 1928, Plantation was Sea Island’s first nine-hole course. Redesigned in 1998 by Rees Jones, Plantation serves along with Seaside as home to the RSM Classic, a PGA TOUR event hosted by Davis Love III.

And now, Davis and his brother, Mark, are again redesigning the course, reintroducing some of its historical elements, drawing on its traditional profile, and bringing into play some of the ideas they have had since they were youngsters, when they grew up playing the course with their father.
